How to use the JR Pass (and when regional passes beat it)

The Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) gives unlimited rides on most JR trains nationwide, including most shinkansen. Since the big price rise in October 2023 it has stopped being an automatic buy. For many trips a regional JR pass or plain single tickets now cost less. This guide covers how the national pass works in 2026, what it doesn't cover, and how to tell whether a regional pass is the better deal.

Prices below were checked on official JR pages on October 15, 2026. Fares change, so always confirm on the linked official page before you buy. Waribiki Alert isn't affiliated with any JR company.

Who can buy the JR Pass

The national pass is only for people who hold a non-Japanese passport and enter Japan as a "temporary visitor" (the stamp or sticker you get at immigration for tourism). If you live in Japan on a work, student or spouse visa, you can't use it, even for a holiday. Most of the regional passes below have the same rule. Residents should look at domestic discount tickets and the seasonal campaigns in our deal list instead.

The official sales and rules site is japanrailpass.net, run by the six JR companies.

What the JR Pass costs in 2026

From the official JR Pass site and JNTO:

Pass (ordinary car, adult) Current price Old price still offered online*
7 days ¥53,000 ¥50,000
14 days ¥84,000 ¥80,000
21 days ¥105,000 ¥100,000

*As of Oct 15, 2026 the official online sales site was still selling at the old price "for a limited time". No end date has been announced. We track this in the deal Japan Rail Pass: old price still available online. Green Car (first class) passes cost more. Children 6–11 pay half.

The days are consecutive. A 7-day pass covers 7 calendar days starting on the date you choose to activate it, not 7 travel days.

How to buy and activate it

  1. Buy online on the official site (the cheapest route right now) or through an authorised sales agent. You get a reservation number.
  2. Collect the physical pass at a JR ticket machine with a passport reader or at a JR ticket office in Japan. You need the passport you entered on, with its temporary-visitor status.
  3. Choose your start date. You can buy it before you arrive and start it later. Plan the start so the pass covers your long-distance days, not your first few days in Tokyo.
  4. Go through the automatic ticket gates by inserting the pass (official site: How to use).

Reserving seats

Seat reservations on JR trains are free with the pass. You can book on the official site after buying, or at JR ticket machines and counters (official instructions). Reserve in peak periods: Golden Week (late April–early May), Obon (mid-August) and New Year. During those weeks JR Central makes all Nozomi seats reserved-only (JR Central), and the other trains fill up fast. Large luggage over 160 cm total dimensions needs a "seat with oversized baggage area" reservation on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen.

The Nozomi and Mizuho rule

The fastest Tokaido and Sanyo shinkansen trains, Nozomi and Mizuho, aren't included in the pass. Since October 2023 you can ride them by buying a separate "Nozomi/Mizuho ticket" for each ride. The official JR Pass site lists the price by section. For example, Tokyo–Shin-Osaka is ¥4,960 (official page). The ticket is sold at JR ticket machines and counters in Japan, up to one month ahead, not online.

On the Tokyo–Osaka route the free Hikari trains take only about 15–30 minutes longer, so most pass holders just take a Hikari.

What the JR Pass doesn't cover

The quick test: is the national pass worth it?

  1. List your long JR trips (shinkansen and limited express).
  2. Look up each single fare on the official JR company sites or a fare search.
  3. Add them up and compare with the pass price for the days you need.

Rule of thumb in 2026: a Tokyo ⇄ Kyoto/Osaka round trip alone doesn't justify a 7-day pass. The pass usually pays off when one week includes at least Tokyo ⇄ Kansai plus a longer leg, such as Hiroshima, Kanazawa, Tohoku or Kyushu. If your trip stays in one region, a regional pass almost always wins.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Japan Rail Pass in 2026?

The standard (ordinary car) pass is ¥53,000 for 7 days, ¥84,000 for 14 days and ¥105,000 for 21 days. As of Oct 15, 2026 the official online sales site was still selling at the older ¥50,000 / ¥80,000 / ¥100,000 for a limited time, with no end date announced.

Can I ride the Nozomi with a JR Pass?

Not on the pass alone. You need a separate Nozomi/Mizuho ticket for each ride, priced by section (Tokyo–Shin-Osaka is ¥4,960 per the official JR Pass site). It is sold at JR ticket machines and counters, not online.

Who can buy the Japan Rail Pass?

Holders of a non-Japanese passport who enter Japan with 'temporary visitor' status. Residents of Japan can't use it.

Is the JR Pass worth it for Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka only?

Usually not. A Tokyo–Kyoto round trip on Hikari costs less than a 7-day pass. Buy single tickets, or a regional pass such as the JR Kansai WIDE Area Pass (¥12,000, 5 days) once you're in Kansai.
